SCHOOLS will receive up to a weeklong visit from the Breakout Box, an immersive learning environment that comes right to your parking lot.

STUDENTS will compete and collaborate in an immersive design and build challenge that builds STEM and manufacturing skills and introduces local career opportunities.

TEACHERS will receive a fully equipped classroom activity kit with standards-aligned curriculum, lesson plans, training, and all materials and supplies to explore manufacturing topics in the classroom. 

ALL PARTICIPANTS will gain access to our careers portal with information and resources about related events, internships, and more.

The Breakout Box Experience

Learning Undefeated’s onboard game experiences take place inside the Breakout Box and use immersive reality, light, sound, touch screen walls, sensors, and interactive gameplay to build understanding of relevant manufacturing-related concepts. Learning Undefeated currently offers the Manufacturing Challenge and Biomanufacturing Mission as part of this program.

Breakout Box: Manufacturing Challenge | Experience Preview 

In a world where sunglasses are not just a matter of fashion but a necessity for survival, participants will embark on an immersive adventure filled with intrigue, hazards, and reward. The Mission: infiltrate a manufacturing facility that has been monopolized by Evil Eye Corp. to manufacture affordable and sustainable sunglasses for the masses.  

The Breakout Box: Manufacturing Challenge takes high school students on a 35-minute immersive adventure where they apply computational thinking and problem-solving to successfully run an eyewear manufacturing facility. From the moment they step inside the custom-built immersive learning pod, students will experiment with game-based learning to build their critical thinking, collaboration, and manufacturing skills.

Participants will control and manipulate different areas throughout the manufacturing process including scheduling, inventory, machine operations, quality control, maintenance, and distribution.

Students will collaborate to overcome disruptions to each process area to meet their goals. By the end of the experience, students will be able to understand the manufacturing process and the importance of teamwork. Students will walk away with a resource card to discover local manufacturing opportunities including high school pathways, internships, and entry level career options.

Breakout Box: Biomanufacturing Mission 

Welcome to the front lines of biotechnology. Participants will step into the role of a new technician at a state-of-the-art biomanufacturing facility. The Mission: a partner site has gone down, and a batch of cancer-fighting antibodies is stuck mid-process. With 50 patients counting on this treatment, it’s up to you to finish the job. 

The Breakout Box: Biomanufacturing Mission takes high school students on a 45-minute immersive adventure where they are trained on how cells are grown to produce therapeutics and learn how they are purified in a safe and sterile manner using aseptic technique. Participants will learn the rules, standards, and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) that technicians must follow to get a treatment from the laboratory to patients.

Participants will practice and understand the roles of upstream and downstream manufacturing processes in making a biologic, and practice CGMP such as documentation and verification.

MFG Night Events
To engage families and the community, Learning Undefeated will work with schools to facilitate Manufacturing Night (MFG Night) events in conjunction with Breakout Box visits. Learning Undefeated will collaborate with schools to create an after-school community event for students and their families. These open-to-the-public events are intended to showcase local businesses related to the manufacturing industry and expand parents’ awareness of manufacturing careers. The Breakout Box immersive learning pod will serve as the backdrop for the event and Learning Undefeated will engage industry volunteers to talk with students and families.

MFG Classroom Activities
To deepen student learning in manufacturing, Learning Undefeated has designed in-classroom activities that are offered in tandem with the Breakout Box mobile laboratory. These activities – informed by students, teachers, and manufacturing subject matter experts – give students hands-on experience using manufacturing tools as well as exposure to real-work application of these essential skills in the manufacturing industry.

At the request of participating teachers, Learning Undefeated staff will teach the selected activities in the classroom and provide a professional development opportunity to teachers to learn the curriculum. Teachers who complete the professional development will receive: a certificate to demonstrate their training hours, access to loaner kits for the Design for Manufacturing and Lean Manufacturing activities, and a classroom-ready Metrology set to keep for their school.

Each activity can be run in a 40-60 minute class period.

Available Activities:

Offered alongside the Breakout Box: Manufacturing Challenge 

• Design for Manufacturing | In this activity, students are introduced to the work of engineers in the manufacturing field and are challenged to design a custom part for a new product.  Students choose the correct tools to gather precise measurements as well as create a code to print the design with a 3D pen. Skills Focus: Design, measurement, and programming.
• Lean Manufacturing | In this activity, students are introduced to the concept of lean manufacturing as they work in an airplane manufacturing plant.  Students will be challenged to identify waste in different steps of their production process and will be given multiple opportunities to modify the process to improve efficiency. Skills Focus: Problem solving, communication, and data driven decision making.

Leave Behind (teacher training required, certificate of completion provided):

• Metrology | In this activity, students are introduced to metrology: the science of measurement. Using metric and English rulers as well as precision calipers, students will learn the difference between precision and accuracy and how both play an important role in the manufacturing industry. Skills Focus: Using measurement tools, and precision measurement.

Offered alongside the Breakout Box: Biomanufacturing Mission  

• Precision in Practice (Handout coming soon) | In this activity, students learn to follow a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), use a micropippete, and apply Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) to accurately complete a hands-on laboratory task.

MFG Loaner Kit Program
A teacher support initiative that provides educators access to our hands-on classroom manufacturing activities with or without a Breakout Box mobile lab visit.

How It Works

• Educators complete a 90-minute professional development (virtual or in-person) training on the activities to be eligible to receive kits 
• Once trained, teachers can borrow activity kits for classroom use (materials support classes of up to 30 students at a time), reusable materials
• Each activity can be run in a 40-60 minute class period.
• Loaner kits may be checked out for extended periods (up to one month)
• Free!
